The Countrywide Library of Drugs (NLM) is honored to announce its acquisition of the papers of Louis W. Sullivan, MD, previous United States Secretary of Wellbeing and Human Companies (HHS). This is the 1st collection of papers from a previous HHS Secretary, acquired by the NLM and will be component of the archival collections of the world’s premier health-related library and institute of the Countrywide Institutes of Wellbeing (NIH).
Louis W. Sullivan is an African American health practitioner who served as secretary of HHS from 1989-1993 and as dean and president of Morehouse College of Drugs (MSM) from 1975-1989 and from 1993-2002. The Countrywide Institute on Minority Wellbeing and Wellbeing Disparities at NIH was 1st set up as an Business less than the NIH Director by Secretary Sullivan in 1990 and was elevated to an Institute in 2010.
The Louis W. Sullivan Papers consist of Dr. Sullivan’s HHS chronological correspondence, action/briefing documents, every day calendars, speeches, information clippings, White House memorabilia, celebration pictures, and honorary levels and awards. The collection files Secretary Sullivan’s attempts to educate the community on the risks of tobacco use, such as halting the introduction of Uptown, a cigarette made for advertising and marketing to minority communities introduce new and enhanced food labels initiate a $one hundred million minority male health and fitness and injuries prevention initiative and increase the Countrywide Institutes of Wellbeing funds over $five billion.
About his time as Secretary, Dr. Sullivan stated: “I am grateful for the option to have served as U.S. Secretary of Wellbeing and Human Companies, for the duration of a major time to oversee the expansion of its plans and add to the racial, ethnic, and gender diversity of its management. This improved the department’s outreach to all Americans.”
Dr. Sullivan gained his undergraduate diploma from Morehouse Higher education in 1954 and his health-related diploma in 1958 from Boston College College of Drugs.
Right after keeping positions at Harvard Health-related College, Seton Hall Higher education of Drugs, Boston College Health-related Heart, and Boston Metropolis Healthcare facility, Dr. Sullivan returned to Morehouse Higher education in 1975 to serve as dean and director of the Health-related Schooling Software. Less than his management, the Health-related Schooling Software grew to become independent from Morehouse Higher education in 1981 and was renamed Morehouse College of Drugs (MSM). Dr. Sullivan served as president and dean of MSM prior to and subsequent his tenure as secretary of HHS. He was also chair of the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities from 2002-2009 and was co-chair of the President’s Fee on HIV and AIDS from 2001-2006.
Dr. Sullivan is chairman of the Sullivan Alliance to Remodel the Wellbeing Professions and is the founding president of the Affiliation of Minority Wellbeing Professions Educational institutions (AMHPS). He is the author of The Morehouse Mystique: Turning out to be a Doctor at the Nation’s Most recent African American Health-related College (with Marybeth Gasman, 2012, Johns Hopkins College Push) and his autobiography Breaking Ground: My Daily life in Drugs (with David Chanoff, 2014, College of Georgia Push).
The NLM Heritage of Drugs Division houses the papers of distinguished community health and fitness leaders, such as other officials of the U.S. Office of Wellbeing and Human Companies (and its predecessor the U.S. Office of Wellbeing, Schooling and Welfare), such as Faye Abdellah, Edward Brandt, Emery Johnson, and June Osborn the papers of NIH Directors Harold Varmus, Bernadine Healy, Donald Fredrickson, James A. Shannon, Robert Marston and the papers of Surgeons Normal Regina Benjamin, Jocelyn Elders, C. Everett Koop, Antonia Novello, Julius Richmond, and Luther Terry.
